-Travel to Gyangtse

Here's the travel guide to Gyangtse (or Gyangtse), ranking as the fourth largest town in Tibet after Lhasa, Shigatse and Chamdo. Gyangtse stands at an elevation of more than 13,000 feet and is Tibet's most important city and famous centre for Tibet's wool trade. The town, a stop on an ancient trade route connecting India with Central Tibet, has a population of just 8,000 people. Gyangtse is also known throughout Tibet and the world for making the best Tibetan carpets. Tibetan carpets are a world-class carpet and can be compared with those of Persia and Turkey. The carpets made in this city have over 600 years of history.

The Gyangtse Carpet Factory was built in 1973 and has produced more than 100 different kinds of rugs used for many different purposes. These carpets are thick and strong, heat-preserving and waterproof made from pure Tibetan wools, yet they are also very soft. Many of the carpets use traditional Tibetan designs in the weaving and are very unique to the region. There is one particular kind of Tibetan carpet that is produced by the Gyangtse Carpet Factory that has been appointed the key national enterprise for carpet exports. Recently, some great projects such as the Potala Palace, Mt. Everest and Great Wall of China have been added to embroideries and many of them are collected and displayed as curios.

There are buses running from Xigatse and Lhasa (via Xigatse) to Gyangtse on a regular basis. However, most people arrive by guided travel groups from the capital. Accomodation is centred around the main street with most travellers head for Jianzang Hotel which has good rates, is clean & has a fairly decent restaurant.
